car2go berlin carsharing

Drive a Mercedes or a smart with Car2go in Berlin

Car2go is the biggest carsharing company worldwide. You’ll find them in more than 25 cities across Canada, USA, China, France, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Austria and Italy.

How cool is that! And if you register with car2go in any of those cities in Europe, you’ll be able to drive almost in any of the other European cities. You just need to agree to the terms and conditions of each country and then you’re good to go. Easy peasy!

So if you’re on a business trip or visiting a friend, you can move around town with car2go. Depending on the city, specially in a city like Berlin, you’ll also find other carsharing options like DriveNow or MILES. Or feel like something a little smaller? Check out scooter sharing companies like COUP or ecooltra! Instead of jumping from app to app to access these different services, you can use Free2Move which displays all the car, scooter and bike sharing providers in Europe and North America on ONE map. So wherever you travel, you just need to open your app to see which providers are available around you.

First step to start using car2go

Start off by registering online or on the car2go app. You’ll be asked to fill up the form with your personal information, complete an identity check and enter a payment method – so have your driving license and credit card ready before you start. Once your driver’s license has been successfully validated, you’ll be able to start using car2go!

FYI: to be validated for car2go you need to be over 18 years old and have had a valid driver’s license for at least a year. Here’s a link to their terms & conditions, it might come in handy.

And as a side note: there are plenty of other carsharing providers in Berlin and with Free2Move, not only will you have access to all them, but you’ll also be able to sign up to all the providers with just ONE registration. So you won’t need to go through the process multiple times! Nice right?

Start driving

Once your account has been validated you’re ready to drive! Woohoo! Open the car2go or free2move app. Reserve the car you want (this is free for the first 20 minutes, after which you can purchase more reservation time, or let your reservation expire). Next, find the vehicle on the street using the map, and start your rental once you’re in front it! First, enter your driving code and then the three-digit code that will appear on the little screen in the front window.

Park the car in car2go’s business zone

Car2go’s vehicles can be used in a certain area in each city they’re available in, which is also called business zone. You need to park within this business zone to return the car and end your rental. If you want to drive outside of the business zone, say to visit your grandmother, you can take a hourly package and keep the keys with you, and then end your rental when you’re back in the business zone.

The GREAT news is that both Schönefeld and Tegel Airports are included in the car2go’s Berlin business areas. So you can drive and drop your car to and from both airports. If this is something you’re interested in check out our guide for using carsharing at Berlin’s Airports,  where you’ll find everything you need to know, from where to park to the extra fees you’ll be charged.
